Guiding behaviours is not about discipline or punishment. It is about helping children develop the principles, attitudes and skills required to become competent, caring, confident and responsible people. The critically important process of guiding children starts at birth. Infants who learn that the world is a safe place where their needs will be met, and people are caring are already learning essential life lessons.
Remember that each child is an individual who grows, develops and responds to life in their own way. The most important gift you can give a child is to let them know that you value and care for them as the unique individual they are.
